Animation Principles

Today we focus upon the 'Principles of Physical Animation'. These main priciples were developed by Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston. Two of Disneys famous 'Nine Old Men'. The 'Nine Old Men' were a fundamental group of supervising animators pioneering Disney's unique style of animation.
  1. Squash and stretch- Demonstrates weight and volume to a character.
  2. Anticipation- Prepares the viewers for an action.
  3. Staging- Directs the viewers attention to the storyline.
  4. Straight Ahead Action and Pose to Pose- From the first drawing to the end drawing in sequence. And Pose to Pose uses key drawings done at intervals.
  5. Follow Through and Overlapping Action- Character stops but their arms or hair need to catch up. Overlapping the character changes direction while his clothes or hair continues forward.
  6. Slow In and Slow Out- Fewer drawings make the action faster and more drawings make the action slower.
  7. Arcs- Natural action and better flow.
  8. Secondary Action- Adds more dimension to a character. Supporting action.
  9. Timing- More drawings between poses slow and smooth the action. Fewer drawings make the action faster and crisper.
  10. Exaggeration- Extreme distortion of a drawing or extremely broad caricature of facial features, expressions, poses, attitudes and actions.
  11. Solid Drawing (same or different as Weight)- Basic principles of drawing form, weight, volume solidity and three dimension.
  12. Appeal- Easy to read design, clear drawing, and personality development that will capture and involve the audience¹s interest.

Animation History 101!- 'Lady & the Tramp'

Welcome, Welcome, Welcome! to the magical world of story telling. On topic today is the well loved CLASSIC 'Lady and the Tramp' by Disney. Oh bless them. They continue to inspire generations after generations. The realistic style of there animation is beliveable and in turn captivating. Joyfully we relate to there lovable characters and find ourselfs exscaping into there world of imagination.

How did Disney get his idea for 'Lady and the Tramp'? Who could ever really know. Many people around Walt remember the time he had an 'IDEAS' man working at his studio by the name of Joe Grant. This was during the late 1930's at Disney studios when Walt became inspired by a drawing Joe had sketched of his family pet, a spring a spanual. Some kind of cute dog. It is believed that Walt was invited to dinner by Joe and his wife. That night when Walt viewed the drawing the ideas for 'Lady and the Tramp' were born.
Work began on the concept and by 1943 Walt viewed the storyboard for the first time. He didn't like it. The problem layed with Lady. She was too nice. The mean 'Mother-in-law' with the crazy cats and the evil rate were not enough of a catalist for the making of a great strong story.

While the show had been put back on the shelf, Disney came across an artical in the Cosmopolitian magazine about a sinical dog named Dan- 'Happy Dan the sinical dog'. From the artical Walt had the idea of combining a 'sinical dog' with a 'too nice' lady dog. A great IDEA was born.
There may be many takes on how Walt concieved the idea but my favorate story was about the gift he gave his wife. Wraped up in a hat box was a puppy. Could this of been the birth of his original idea, may it simply be an evolutionary step for his idea or did it really happen at all? Retorical questions are always fun for coming up with new ideas.

The time had rolled by and Disney studios had servived the budget cuts and down scales impossed by the global confict of WWII. It was time to start making feature films once again. It was now 1953 and a new animator was helping Walt with 'Lady and the Tramp'. His name was Ward Greene. Joe Grant had left the studio and his initial contribution had been cut from the film. The evolving IDEA of a love story between two different characters from two different world became the main theme for the film.

This beautiful film entered the world in 1955. It was released to theaters on June 22. As a gratefull fane of Disney's works I would like to say that however this move concept was created it has become a gift to the world for all to enjoy.

No Time Like The Present

Hello All and welcome to my wonderfull world!

Yes there is no time like the present to be enjoying life. I definitely am.
So starts a new chapter in my life. New places, New faces and the big world of animation to enjoy learning.
True to my form I have set my mind to a plan and it only feels like now that my feet are begining to catch up. A very short time ago I was dreaming about this very moment. First day of class in ANIMATION :) , a new State to explore and interesting people to meet. As you can imagine it is nothing like what I had invisioned. Really I didn't have a clue what to expect. Luckily for me it has turned out to be better then anything I had imagined. 'Carpe Deim'- Seize the day!

The Art of ANIMATION
Art is my favorate love of life. I love it all. Art galleries, graffiti walls, music, street art, visual images in all shapes and sizes. I come from a photography background with a interested in the moving image. Maybe its just a natural instinict for a photographer to want to explore the world of a moving image. It would seem that way for me. The art of animation is a whole new world of limitless potential for making any idea a reality. Let the fun begin!

One of the many great things about animation is the study of MOVEMENT. This clip from 'Minnie the Moocher' is my favourite. The introduction to the episode is great swinging dance number and you see how they have applyed it to the ghost character in the cartoon.

Hope you enjoy!!!!!!!!!

Always remeber to dream BIG!
